City of Ionia
National Water Award
This
isn't exactly a question that is asked us by our callers
very often, but because it has made the national news, and
the fact that Ionia, MI is the next town East of us, we
had to comment.
The
city of Ionia, Michigan has been judged by the American
Water Works Association as having quality water. The local
NBC affiliate in our area (WOODTV 8 - Grand Rapids, MI)
picked up the story and aired a water tasting segment on
March 3. Apparently most of the water taste-testers chose
Ionia City water over two popular brands of bottled water.
Not surprising seeing as how the aquifer that supplies water
to the city is from a once-frozen prehistoric glacier near
Traverse City a few hundred feet down. The city then strictly
enforces environmental laws to protect it from outside contamination.
The award is for the efforts taken by the Ionia Department
of Public Utilities to protect this aquifer.
The
award from the American Water Works Association wil be presented
to the Ionia Department of Public Utilities at a ceremony
in San Francisco in June.
