EZ TDS Meter
Having
an inexpensive, easy to use TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
meter around can be very handy for determining the performance
of your filter or reverse osmosis system. They can also
measure water's hardness. They are an absolute must-have
for monitoring the efficiency of your reverse osmosis filter.
They take the guess-work out of knowing when to change your
RO pre-filter which can extend the useful life of the expensive
membrane. And probably the least costly and easiest to use
TDS meter we've found is the TDS EZ pocket meter by HM Digital.
It
is compact, rugged, accurate and simple to use. Two button
operation, on/off and Hold, gives visual confirmation that
your reverse osmosis system is performing to specifications.
On the reverse side of the TDS EZ is a color coded chart
which shows the normal operating ranges of RO and distilled
water (0-50), filtered water (50-100), tap water (200-400)
and the recommended EPA's maximum contamination level (400+).
The EZ TDS displays results in parts-per-million (ppm) at
a range of 0-999ppm or 1,000-9,990 in two different modes,
and has a Hold function which allows you to save your measurement
for reading or recording.
Most
reverse osmosis manufacturers recommend changing the sediment
pre-filter every 6 months under normal use, but what is
normal use? The EZ TDS Meter takes all the guessing out
of filter changes. When your reverse osmosis output water
is 30-50ppm, it's time to change the carbon and sediment
pre-filter.
This
meter is also interesting to have around when you have bottled
water. We have personally tested "purified" bottle
water at 55ppm which is much higher than you get out of
a standard RO system. Checking the TDS content of your swimming
pool and hot tub/spa comes in handy as well. Now you can
accurately track what changes occur to your water when trying
out different brands of treatment chemicals.
