Solving Well Water Problems

Private wells can present quite a few problems for homeowners and businesses alike. All water out of an underground well contains some degree of hardness. But hardness is easily removed with a standard water softener. Most wells also produce water with some type of iron contamination. While iron in your water is not considered a health risk according to the US EPA under certain amounts, it can cause many problems with staining of plumbing and fixtures, laundry and often times produces an unpleasant odor. Water Value Company has an excellent iron elimination system available called The Terminator. Using 3 stages of water treatment, it injects oxygen into the water as the well pump runs. It then oxidizes and bleeds off excess air and sulfur gas, and finally filters out the oxidized iron through an automatic backwashing filter system. The Terminator system is very effective in removing high amounts of iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide.

But often times well water will not only contain iron and odor, but bacteria also. Bacteria can be killed with UV filter lamps and chlorinators, but BWI (Better Water Industries) has come out with an ingenious all-in-one device for treating not only bacteria, but iron, sulfur, sulfate reducing bacteria, black manganese, algae, tannins, arsenic and even low pH. It is the Sentry I Open-Air System and it even increases low level well water output. Sentry I Open-Air System

While being ideal for removing very high levels of iron and sulfur gas from your water, the other benefits of this open-air system coupled with a standard water softener downline of the appliance makes for nearly perfect water right out of your tap, no matter how difficult your well water problem may be. The simple design of this open-air system means easy installation. It comes pre-wired and plumbed with a 1-inch inlet valve, adjustable air-draw for oxidation, safety floats, dry pellet chlorinator, submersible pump, and bladder tank. Water enters the Sentry I Open-Air system and is injected with air for oxidation, chlorine for oxidation and disinfection, holding tank and a booster pump to provide higher water pressure to your faucets than a standard well system can.

So if you need to solve multiple problems with your well water and require a simple to use, low maintenance water treatment equipment solution, the Sentry I Open-Air System is the right choice.

When Is A Softener Not A Softener?

First off, I’d like to say that our Water Value blog has drawn in more traffic than any of the others we’ve hosted in the past, so we are going in the right direction. But I have also noticed that only a few members actually post anything related to water treatment or the subject at hand. Just this weekend alone, 183 posts were made to this site that were caught and rejected by our spam blocking software. What a monumental waste of time. So we’ve been forced to allow only registered users to post here from now on. I regret the added inconvenience for our legitimate users, but from now on, users will need to log in before posting. Now on to the subject at hand.

As most of you probably know, we are now marketing the Filtersorb SP media and systems for salt-free water conditioning. Notice I use the word “conditioning” in place of “softening”. I have read countless posts on the web where people are arguing for and against using the term “softener” for this media. Frankly, I do not see that it matters. This Filtersorb SP media produces all of the exact same benefits as a standard water softener, without the slippery feeling you get when you bathe in water treated by it. Yet people argue that because they do not actually remove the hardness or calcium, that the water is not actually soft. I beg to differ, but in the interest of causing bad feelings or worse, confusion, we will refer to them as soft water conditioners.

The Filtersorb SP media actually renders the calcium/magnesium in hard water inert, making it impossible for these minerals to attach themselves to your skin, pipes and surfaces. It even provides for better sudsing action in soapy water, just like a conventional softener. I have one in my home now and I cannot tell the difference between it and my old salt-based softener. I may not be a scientist, but I can make observations of the physical world around me, and my water is “soft”.

No Salt Water Conditioner

This is an exciting development. This is a water softener that does not use chemicals or salt and it is NOT a magnet. It is a revolutionary media that alters the physical properties of the hardness minerals in your water rendering them incapable of adhering to surfaces such as your pipes, water fixtures and shower doors to name a few. It has all the advantages of conventional water softener treatment without the use of additives, electricity or that slippery feeling (which some people like and some do not). This amazing media was developed by a company called CWG USA (Clean Water Group).
They have detailed specification on their web site and we have them on ours as well at the Filtersorb SP section. Basically, a small amount of this Filtersorb SP media is placed in a media tank, the size of which is determined by flow rate and contact time. You size the system based on your water system’s flow rate. The idea is to provide the input water at least 9 seconds of contact time to perform its hardness alteration. When the water comes out of the Filtersorb SP tank, the hardness molecules are crystallized and therefore unable to adhere to surfaces. You still use 50% less soap, no pipe scale or bathroom scale, and it even cleans any mineral deposits and scale out of your plumbing!

Salt Free Water Softener
Water Value has these systems set up with a simple Clack up-flow in and out head, bypass valve and connectors. There is no control valve to set or plug in, no extra tank for holding chlorides and no chemicals. That’s all there is to it. It is the simplest water treatment system to connect that we’ve ever seen.

We are currently testing two other sizes (small and large) and should have those available by next week, but the medium system we have available now has a flow rate range of 5 to 7 gallons which will work for the majority of homes.

Air-Gap Faucet

We now have a standard air-gap faucet available online for reverse osmosis systems. This is a standard air-gap faucet that should fit nearly all RO systems. It should be noted that the Tomlinson designer faucets we carry on that same page come with a removable air-gap so that they may work with either configuration.Tomlinson designer faucets.

So what is an air-gap? It’s simply a mechanism that prevents bad, dirty water from backing up into your reverse osmosis system. Not all ROs require an air-gap, a lot depends on how your drain line is plumbed in. Basically, if there is no way that drain water can back up into your RO drain line, then you do not need an air-gap.

Air-gaps for reverse osmosis systems are typically incorporated at either the drain line connection or up at the RO faucet. For faucet air-gap connections, an air-gap equipped faucet is required. That is why we have now made the air-gap version of our standard RO faucet available.Standard reverse osmosis faucet with air-gap.

Updates

It appears that it has been quite a while since this was last updated, so I’ll list some of the things that have been going on.

Busy? You bet! We are still updating the filter section of the web site and I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or not, but the filter cartridge sales have more than doubled in the last couple of weeks. It could very well have to do with the new lower prices too.

Water Value is now adding an extra component to all of the water softener and automatic backwashing filter systems we carry. This item is called an upper distributor basket and comes in handy when high water flow rates are in effect and when the water flow is connected backwards (which happens now and then). There is no extra cost for this added value to our systems.

Requests for shipping quotes to Alaska and Hawaii have increased quite a bit as well. When requesting shipping rates to AK or HI, be sure to allow us up to one full day to get back with you. Water Value does not mark up shipping costs so an accurate “to the penny” quote from UPS is required by us. Your order items will need to be measured and weighed for each item.

There was a technical problem with the Dealer Listings subscription section. It seems our shopping cart software was adding a shipping fee to the basic subscription. That error has been corrected, so if you know of a local water equipment dealer that would benefit from listing on our site, be sure and let them know.

Quick Note From The Road

Half of us are at the GE Dealer Expo for the new stainless steel control valve demonstrations and training. Once I know any more about them, I’ll post it here.

BAD storm on the way down but the weather is okay now. All orders shipping 2 hours after placed! This new equipment we have is going to work out even better than promised.

No phone support for tomorrow only. Email us if you need us at support@watervalue.com. Thanks!

Water Testing Kits Are In

The new water testing kits are in. We have the Well Water Testing Kit available online now. This kit is ideal for testing the amount of hardness, iron, pH and such elements that are common in private well water systems. Each kit contains two tests for each contaminant so that you can record your water results before treatment and after treatment. The results from these tests are very important in helping to choose the proper treatment equipment and methods for solving your water problems. These kits are reliable and accurate, but they are also inexpensive and come with informative easy to follow instructions and treatment recommendations.

The amount of time wasted on the phone trying to guess at water treatment solutions for customer’s water symptoms is incalculable. These kits will take all the time and guess work out of diagnosing water treatment methods.

The “City Water” test kits should be available online this week also along with a “Complete” water testing kit which covers over a dozen tests – time two – which covers more contaminants than I care to list here. A complete list will be available on our water test web page by the end of the week.

Know What Is In Your Water

This cannot be stressed enough. You must have a water test done or even performed yourself before you can ask us what type of system will solve your water’s problems. Without this information just knowing that the water smells and leaves stains does not give us enough information to make any type of recommendations.

That is one reason we are anxiously looking forward to supporting and distributing a new water testing kit that is not only easy to use, accurate and value priced, but also provides results for numerous water contaminants and conditions. Among them are bacteria, nitrate, nitrite, hydrogen sulfide, hardness, total alkalinity, free chlorine, total chlorine, chloride, copper, sulfate, iron and pH balance.

With these results it will be an easy matter to make accurate recommendations for your water treatment needs. These kits should be available from us early next week and while I’m not sure of the price right now, I can say with confidence that you will not be able to find water testing kits of this caliber for anything less than WaterValue is going to charge. All of the tests mentioned, except for bacteria, can be done twice with these water testing kits. They come with complete and easy to understand instructions and analysis results and also a toll free technical assistance phone number. And you can always call us if you have any questions.

If you are currently experiencing water quality problems, WaterValue.com can solve them for you, but you must know how much of what is in your water first.

A Quick Word About Silicone Grease

Silicone grease is the preferred water tight lubricant for all rubber and vinyl o-rings used on and in water treatment equipment. Whether you’re changing a filter cartridge or attaching a control valve to a media tank, the o-rings are much more apt to perform better with some type of lubricant. Also, the manufacturers of water treatment devices recommend a silicone based lubricant and warn against petrolium based products. The petrolium base products can and will deform o-ring seals and are also eventually washed away by water, which is a natural solvent.

While having a cookout at a friend’s house over the weekend, I noticed that his sliding door was difficult to move. I had the same problem with mine and used some of this silicone lubricant that I use on filters and softeners. It fixed mine right up so I told him about it and that he could get some from our web site. I’ve looked around extensively and have been unable to find any in the local hardware/plumbing/home improvement stores. But when I told him how much it cost, he scoffed at the price. Now we here at WaterValue.com take our pricing very seriously and I was concerned at the value of the lubricant, so I did some more checking around. No, I was unable to find this stuff anywhere except online and they were asking over $20 for a 1.5 ounce tube! We have the 5.3 ounce tube for less than $20 so the initial investment is sound, but I also realized that I have had my tube of silicone grease for more than 4 years and it is still more than 3/4 full. Not only does it have dozens of uses, it can handle very wide temperature changes. It does not freeze or melt as easily as petrolium based products.

Silicone Grease

Silicone grease is my personal term for it but the industry refers to it as a “release agent” or “Dow Corning #7 Release Agent”. Be sure to check it out on our Softener Parts page under Miscellaneous.
