Programming The Fleck 7000

The Fleck model 7000 control valve is unique in that it is rated for higher flow capacities than most 3/4" and 1" control valves. The Fleck 7000 is a 1-1/4" control valve designed for residential use without the cost of a commercial controller and will work on 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4" plumbing connections. While it is possible to connect the model 7000 to larger diameter water pipes, there exist many local ordinances that dictate piping and connection sizing. Be sure to check yours before proceeding.

Except for the piping connections, all of our Water Value water softeners and auto-backwashing filters assemble in the same manner. The media or resin tank arrives empty and the media or resin is added with an included funnel. The drain line which is included, connects the same way for a softener as it does a filter, and in the case of a water softener, the brine line connects to the brine tank. All of that pre-assembly and connection information is available on our Water Softener - Auto-Backwashing Filter Installation page. Photos are provided along with detailed descriptions to help make the job go smoothly. But different control valves require specific setup and programming procedures which we will address here for the Fleck 7000.

The Fleck 7000 water softener/auto-backwashing filter control valve is an electronic computerized device which needs to be programmed prior to use. The service manual that comes with the model 7000 does an excellent job of demonstrating and describing the programming and setup steps but there is more information in the manual than is required to get the system up and running, such as information pertaining to the Master Programming Mode which should be avoided.

The Fleck 7000 conrtrol valve has an LED display with 4 indicator lights. The "In Service" light means the controller is operational. The "Program" light indicates the valve is in program mode. The "Flow" light flashes when water is flowing through the softener and the "P.M." light is on when the clock display is reading afternoon or evening.

The up and down buttons allow you to change values based on which display mode the control valve is in. If it is in setup time mode, pressing the up arrow will increment the time of day and pressing the down button will decrement the time of day. The "Extra Cycle" button is used during programming to advance to the next programming mode and will initiate a manual regeneration when the control valve is in service mode.

There are 3 different configurations for this control valve. One is used for either auto-backwashing filter control which can also work as a time initiated softener or manganese/greensand filter, meter initiated softener control valve and a metered immediate regeneration softener. These instructions will deal only with the metered (on demand) softener control valve in standar programming mode.

Once the softener is connected to the water pipes, set the included bypass valve on the back side of the model 7000 to bypass mode. Open the water supply line to the rest of the house and open a nearby faucet to expel any solder or debris left over from the plumbing process. Once the water from the nearby faucet begins running clean, shut it off. Plug the control valve into an approved power source. Put the bypass valve into service position by first turning the outlet (water out) side of the bypass to service and then slowly turning the inlet (water in) side of the bypass to service.

Check for leaks. Set the time of day. Do not set the time to 12:01 PM to avoid initiating the Master Programming Mode. Now press and hold in the Extra Cycle button for 5 seconds which will initiate an immediate manual regeneration. Step slowly through the regeneration cycles by pressing the up arrow button until you get to the Brine Refill cycle #5. Let the softener fill the brine tank and advance itself to the In Service mode. You may now add salt to the brine tank.

Once the time is set and the brine tank has been filled, press and hold the up and down buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds the Program indicator will light up. Release the up and down arrow buttons. The display should now read "H - 9". This is the feed water hardness programming stage. Using the up and down arrow buttons, adjust the display until the value matches your water's hardness rating in grains-per-gallon. For example, if your water's hardness is 18 gpg, press and release the up arrow button until the display reads "H - 18". You will also want to factor in any iron you may have in your water as well.

A standard softener can treat up to 2.5 parts-per-million (ppm) of iron without the need for a seperate iron treatment system so long as your water contains "clear water" iron. See this article on how to identify different types of iron in your water. Basically add 5 grains per gallon of hardness to your water for every 1 ppm (mg/L) of iron. For example: 18 grain per gallon of hardness with 2 ppm of iron would equal a compensated hardness of 28 gpg.

Let's move on to the next programming step. Press the Extra Cycle button once to advance to the Regeneration Time mode. The display should now show "2:00" which is 2 AM because the PM indicator light is not on. To change the time of day or night that you would like your softener to regenerate (usually the time when no one is likely to be using water), use the up or down arrow buttons.

Once the desired time of regeneration is set, press the Extra Cycle button to advance to the Regeneration Cycle Times display. These are default durations for each backwashing cycle and should not be adjusted. The first display is the Backwash Cycle Duration. Press the Extra Cycle button to advance to the Brine Draw Duration. Press the Extra Cycle button to advance to the 2nd Backwash Duration. Press the Extra Cycle button to advance to the Rapid Rinse Duration. Press the Extra Cycle button to advance to the Refill Duration. Press the Extra Cycle button once again to advance to the 6th duration cycle which is not used for the downflow metered configuration.

Pressing the Extra Cycle button will now display the Extended Diagnostics mode which will be of little use to a new installation. It displays the number of days since the last regeneration. Press the Extra Cycle button to display the gallons used since last regeneration and the gallons of reserve left before the next regeneration. Pressing the Extra Cycle button one more time results in the 7000 exiting the programming mode and reverting to the In Service mode.

Your Fleck 7000 water softener system is now producing treated water. Because your water heater tank may be holding several gallons of un-treated water, you might not notice a difference while bathing or washing laundry until the un-treated water is used up.
